Filoxenia, which means hospitality in Greek, refers to the act of caring for a stranger in someone’s home. It was a custom for the ancient Greeks to welcome and take care of strangers in their homes. They believed in the idea of hospitality and considered it as a moral duty and a sacred rule of the Gods (patron Xenios Zeus). That is why foreigners, as sent by the gods, were considered holy, honored, and respected persons. The rituals of hospitality created and expressed a reciprocal relationship between guest and host. Nowadays, material benefits (such as offering gifts) and non-material ones (such as protection and housing) express this relationship.
